How You can Help!

You are here Who We Are
Who We Are

We know Columbia can do better on behalf of the homeless among us.

This conviction brought 200 people to Eastminster Presbyterian Church in the summer of 2007. From that meeting, the Midlands Interfaith Homelessness Action Council (MIHAC) was born.

The MIHAC is committed to finding a comprehensive solution to the significant problem of homelessness in our midst.

-     We serve food at the city’s winter shelter
-      We help sponsor events like Homelessness Awareness Week
-      We are a moral force for compassion and justice in our community.

The MIHAC draws inspiration from the Old Testament and the passage of Scripture printed at the top of this page. We come from different faiths and denominations, but we are united in a belief that we can make Columbia a better place for all of us.

The MIHAC is led by Amos Disassa, an associate pastor of Eastminster Presbyterian Church. The MIHAC executive committee includes a cross section of Midlands business and religious leaders.

The members and supporters (LINK) of the MIHAC believe that working together, we can accomplish what so far has eluded Columbia--and as a result, our community will be a better place for all of us.

Will you help us Light the Way for the homeless? There is much you can do:

Educate yourself. You will find a great deal of background information on this website.
Pray.   The needs are great, but our God is greater.

Columbia is at a critical point. The creation of a center providing a wide range of services to the homeless is within our reach. But in the past, efforts to reach a comprehensive solution have failed for a number of reasons. That’s why MIHAC was created--and why we invite you to get involved.
The Blueprint

The Blueprint to Address Homelessness in the Midlands is a comprehensive plan of 10 strategies designed to reduce homelessness and lessen its negative impact on the community. It was developed through the dedication and partnership of a number of individuals and agencies. In particular, the United Way of the Midlands and the City of Columbia were instrumental in its development. Since its publication, a number of agencies and organizations have endorsed the Blueprint.
